How overtime is calculated
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), most hourly workers must receive at least 1.5× their regular hourly rate for any hours worked over 40 in a single workweek. This is commonly called "time and a half."
Some states (especially California) require daily overtime after 8 hours and double time after 12 hours in one day. Always check your state's labor department for specifics.
Exempt employees (typically salaried managers, professionals, or those earning over a federal threshold) are not entitled to overtime pay — though some states have higher thresholds than the federal minimum.
