How PTO accrual works
Most US employers grant PTO on an accrual basis: instead of giving you all 15 days on January 1st, they award a fraction of that each pay period. Bi-weekly accrual for 15 days = ~4.62 hours per paycheck.
Some employers use "lump sum" (all PTO available at year start) โ more generous but riskier if you leave mid-year and have used more than you accrued.
Watch for caps: many policies limit how much PTO you can carry over (e.g., max 80 hours), so you may lose unused balance at year-end. "Use it or lose it" is legal in many states (CA bans it).
